Julia Brown Art Psychotherapy
Private Art Psychotherapy and School-Based Art Therapy Provision
About me
I’m Julia Brown, an Art Psychotherapist based in Swansea. I offer a warm, safe and supportive space for children, adolescents and young adults to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences through creativity. I specialise in working with young people who may be experiencing emotional, social or behavioural difficulties.
I’m particularly interested in the ways that creativity can help us make sense of our experiences and express things that can sometimes be difficult to put into words. My approach is influenced by narrative therapy, as well as my interest in folklore, symbolism and storytelling. I enjoy exploring the meaning that images, stories and creative expression can hold for each individual.
I’m also inspired by the natural world and am a trained ecotherapist. Where appropriate, I like to incorporate our relationship with nature into my work, recognising the ways that spending time outdoors and connecting with the natural environment can support reflection, creativity and wellbeing.
I’m HCPC registered and have experience working across both school and community settings, offering one-to-one and group sessions. I have supported young people experiencing a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, neurodiversity, difficulties with self-esteem, school attendance and engagement, SEN, bullying, anger and attachment difficulties.
I also have experience supporting young people and young adults affected by domestic abuse, drug and substance misuse, socioeconomic disadvantage, employability and life transitions. Alongside this, I have worked with young carers, providing a supportive space where they can explore their experiences, develop self-understanding and build confidence.
I take a flexible and person-centred approach, adapting sessions to the individual needs, interests and strengths of each person I work with. There is no expectation to be “good at art” — the focus is on the process of creating, exploring and finding your own ways of expressing yourself.
Above all, I aim to create a relaxed, welcoming and non-judgemental space where young people can feel comfortable being themselves and explore things at their own pace.
